After separation, the relationship that failed as a marriage has to keep working as a partnership — a narrower, longer and more important one. The couples whose children do best are rarely the ones who feel least angry; they are the ones whose communication system does not depend on how anyone feels on a given Thursday.

Treat it as a business correspondence

The working frame: you are colleagues in a small company whose product is your children's childhood. Business communication has three properties worth copying: it is about the subject, it is written, and it is calm. 'Liam has a match Saturday 11:00, I can take him and bring him to you at 2:00' needs no warmth and permits no escalation.

  • One agreed channel for logistics — a co-parenting app or plain email
  • A 24-hour response norm for non-urgent items, phone for genuine emergencies
  • Nothing about new partners, money grievances or old marriage wounds in the logistics channel

The tools that carry the structure

A shared calendar (co-parenting apps or even a plain shared Google calendar) holds the schedule so nobody negotiates it weekly. Apps such as OurFamilyWizard or AppClose add read receipts and message records — useful both for clarity and, if it ever comes to it, as evidence of who said what. Choose one tool, both use it, no side channels.

Ground rules that prevent the classic fights

  • Handover talk stays on the children: 'how was the weekend' yes, 'we need to discuss maintenance' no
  • Late means late, not hostile: the plan's grace rule applies without commentary
  • Children are never messengers and never asked what happens in the other house
  • If a message makes your blood pressure rise, draft it, wait an hour, send the two-sentence version

When communication stays toxic

Some ex-relationships cannot sustain even business email. Parallel parenting is the designed fallback: each household runs fully independently under the plan, contact is minimised to logistics-only messages or a communication book that travels with the child, and all negotiation moves into mediated sessions rather than daily messages. Reducing contact is not failure — it is the correct engineering for high-conflict pairs.

Preguntas frecuentes

Do we need a co-parenting app, or is WhatsApp fine?

Apps add records and structure; WhatsApp adds speed and habit. Either works if the ground rules hold — the channel matters less than what you refuse to send through it.

What about talking directly at handovers?

Keep it short, warm, and child-focused. Any substantive issue goes to the written channel, where it can be answered calmly and recorded.

She/he ignores messages — what then?

Note the pattern, restate the plan's response window once, and bring the breakdown to mediation. Persistent non-communication that breaks the plan is enforceable once the plan is a court order.

In summary

Written, business-like, single-channel, calm: communication that treats the co-parenting relationship as a long project, not a continuation of the marriage. The system — not goodwill — is what survives a bad week.
